A phase-locked loop generates an output signal with phase related to the phase of its input signal. A PLL consists of a VCO, a phase comparator, and a low pass filter connected to form a closed-loop frequency-feedback system. Generally paired with a separate VCO at the input, they're known to impart interesting timbral characteristics, like portamento and frequency jitter, to your sound.
